I wouldn’t have liked it He just kept going.” The man, who has lived in Sumner 45 years, said he left his home at 12.15 p.m. The pensioner saw them approach a red car and felt they were acting suspiciously. He said he was concerned they saw him leave his home and after visiting the local post office he returned home Instead of continuing on another message.
“When I came back the car was in front of the house and the gate was open. I realised they were inside.
“I opened the door quietly and grabbed a crowbar I have alongside the bed.
He yelled out and the men, who were in the/kitchen, fled through the back door. The pensioner realised they would have to go. round the house to get away. He went out the front door and caught up with them out the front.
They were part-Maori, aged in their early 20s and wore denim' clothing. They took a radiocassette player.
