Cossack Warrior to win

by

J. J. BOYLE

Rain In Melbourne yesterday, and more of it forecast for today, could have won today’s Caulfield Cup for Cossack Warrior.

“He’ll handle any kind of track, but the easing in the ground will suit Cossack Warrior more than most,’’ said the Melbourne racing correspondent of "The Press,” Adrian Dunne, yesterday. Dunne reports that Cossack Warrior has pleased in everything he has done since he won the Herbert Power Handicap, and is confident in the four-year-old’s ability to become the first to win the Herbert Power Handicap-Caulfield Cup double since 1970. The New . Zealanders, Rising Fast and My Hero, have been the only others to win that double since World War 11, but Dunne believes Cossack Warrior will never get a better chance to win one of the rich Australian cups. “He comes from a top stable and will be ridden by a top rider in Michael Clark," Dunne said yesterday.

“A wide barrier is hardly likely to worry him. He’ll probably settle back, and storm home.” Cossack Warrior is a half-brother by Bletchingly to Cossack Prince, which finished second to Hayai in the 1983 Caulfield Cup. Dunne regards the New Zealand-owned-and-trained Secret Seal and Noble Kit as the best of Cossack Warrior’s rivals. He said he found it hard to enthuse over the favourite, Beau Zam.

“He’s the only horse in the field carrying weight-for-age, he’s been beating only very ordinary three-year-olds in Sydney and he has to show he can adapt straight away to Caulfield, which can be tricky. On the other hand, Cossack Warrior has won three races at Caulfield.” Beau Zam’s trainer, Bart Cummings, believes Cossack Warrior is one of three main dangers for his New Zealand-bred three-year-old in today’s sAust627,ooo race. Cummings also rates the chances of Balciano and Secret Seal highly but his confidence in a stable victory was boosted by Beau Zam’s satisfactory progress in training this week.

Beau Zam, a close relation of Balciano’s sire, Balmerino, was purchased for $200,000 at the Trentham sales.

His dam, Belle Cherie, is a sister in blood to Surround, the best year-old fHly of her year in Australia under the

direction of the Caulfield trainer, Geoff Murphy, whose Caulfield Cup hopeful today is the three-year-old, Marwong.
