Shiny Woman provides tonic

Shiny Woman provided her owner, Derek Copland, with a good tonic when she took out the Bruce Reid Motors Bracelet, at the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park yesterday.

Copland is recovering from injuries he received when shoeing a horse on his farm recently, and had to call upon the services of his close friend, Mr Tony Dickens of Methven, to take care of his team.

With three runners in the race (Aurum, Shiny Woman and Dawn Mist) his chances of taking a major prize had to be good. However, it was the least supported runner of the three, Shiny Woman, which won the event.

The fawn bitch had to overcome some crowding at the first bend and was forced over extra ground. She eventually settled about seven lengths off the pace which was being set by Wee Asset.

As the field rounded the home turn the daughter of Bright and Shiny—Airwoman swooped up to Wee Asset, and came on to win by a length. It was another game run by Wee Asset, and she held third comfortably over Aurum which raced handily throughout. The favourite, Micro Millie’s chances were badly hindered when she was checked at the first turn and she ran on from a distant position.

Swannee Hobbs made yet another last-to-first run when she blitzed her rivals in the Stan Wheatley Garage Stakes (805 m by four and a half lengths. Roydon James held second with Miss Janine, which raced handily throughout, holding third
