Chance to win $1 million

By DAVID MCCARTHY

The Introduction of a bonus which could see the top three-year-old earning $1 million for three wins has been welcomed by Mr John Austin, the chairman of the Canterbury Jockey Club, as a "substantial boost” for the Feltex Two Thousand Guineas.

The Guineas is the first leg of a sponsored "Triple Crown” bonus worth to the horse which can also win the North City Finance Avondale Guineas and the Troy Corporation New Zealand Derby. Total winning stakes offered for the three races is S7H,Mf which means any horse winning the. Triple Crown will earn six figures in total prize money. The bonus is backed by

each of the three sponsors for the respective events, and the clubs concerned. "It means we should attract the cream of the three-year-old crop because they must compete at Rlccarton to ensure they have a chance of winning the bonus,” Mr Austin said. "Our own sponsors have again played a role in making the Guineas that much more attractive and we are grateful to them for that” The prospect of winning $1 million for three races is alluring but not one easily accomplished. In the last 18 years only two horses have managed to win the three races and they bore the honoured names of Balmerino and Uncle Remus.
