Guatemala peace talks begin

NZPA-Reuter Madrid Government and guerrilla representatives from Guatemala began talks in Madrid yesterday aimed at ending Central America’s longest civil war, a private Spanish study group said. The Institute for Latin American and African studies said the talks had started but that no other details were available.

The Guatemalan Government and the rebels agreed when they announced the talks last week to impose media silence on their progress. There was no official word on the meeting from either the Guatemalan Embassy or the Spanish Government, which is hosting but not mediating in the negotiations. The Guatemala negotiations are the latest in a

series of Central American peace moves following a breakthrough agreement by the region’s leaders two months ago. The Guatemalan Ambassador, Danilo Barillas, said the talks would be the first formal meeting between the Government and the rebels in a war of insurgency that has claimed more than 30,000 lives in the last 16 years.
