Total cargo handled through the port of Lyttelton in August was 266,500 tonnes compared with 178,286 tonnes for the same month last year. This was 23 per cent above budget and 49 per cent above August last year. Most of the increase came from shipment of coal during the month, the deputy general manager, Mr Peter Morgan, said in his monthly report. Cargo tonnage in the year to the end of August was 0.3 per cent above budget. Mr Morgan said he expected the total for the year to be close to 2.5 million tonnes.
