Band battles
The Christchurch heats for the battle of the bands competition opens at the Playroom, MacKenzie's Hotel, tomorrow and Saturday evenings. Friday evening features five of the bands, and on Saturday afternoon, from 2 p.m., the other 10 bands take their turns. No draw had been made at the time of writ-, ing, but the 15 bands are: Junction 14, Scarrobs, Vibe Race, Ahika, The Eclectic Club, The Prodigies, Spy vs Spy, Ltd, Moa Hunters, Worlds Apart, Borderland, The Harlequins, Big Game Hunters, Bel Air, Kismet, and The Camellias. And In another competition, more than 340 entries were received, for this year's New Zealand music awards, which will be presented on Novem-
ber 9. The awards this year show a broader appeal, with bands such as The Chills, ■ Sneaky Feelings, and Aotearoa figuring in the final selections, alongside artists such as Ardijah, Herbs, and Dave Dobbyn. . Even Christchurch’s folk band. Bushfire, figures in a number of categories. Meanwhile, the closing date for the Rheineck rock awards has been extended to next Monday because of last minute demands for entry forms. Another band line-up takes place at King George Tavern today when Lord Potty, The S. Pilchard Band, Hiding From Stan, Nick Jackman, and Lovehorror Web are on the bill.
