‘Lost race'
ck r Sir,—Winton Royds is to be congratulated for his letter (September 26) about the “lost” young people who get insufficient help at school and who lead aimless lives after they leave school. Recently 'some of these young people were squatting in an abandoned house in Christchurch, threatening neighbouring residents with knives and calling out, “Cut him, \cut pirn!? to egg each other on more aggressive. The police put two of them in a cell for a night, but let them out the next day. How adequate are such responses? Surely the Government should recruit responsible volunteers from among the unemployed and use them to give these disturbed young people compulsory private tuition and guidance. It need not cost the Government much — unemployed university graduates and others could simply devote a few hours a week to helping without any addition to their benefit. — Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. October's,. 1987.
