Sir,—Grant Hudson’s letter of October 5 represents a misinterpretation and distortion of my views (September 30). I, too, would be against mining in any of our national parks, which have unique land forms and ecological values of unsurpassed

quality. However, Nbrth-West Nelson Forest Park is not a national park, but a forest park, which has >a different status. These parks were set up by the New Zealand Forest Service as multiple-use areas. Some of these will be administered by the Forestry Corporation and others by the Department of Conservation (as is the case with the NorthWest Nelson area). A prospecting licence application in this forest park, with restrictions on prospecting to be drawn up by the Department of Conservation, is a far cry from mining in our national parks.—Yours, etc.,
