Intersection plans
Approved plans for reading works at the intersection of Montreal and Armagh streets will be reconsidered. The Christchurch City Council’s works and traffic committee passed the question of the sweeping corner of Cranmer Square to a sub-committee. That sub-committee of Crs Ron Wright, David Close and Maurice Carter will reconsider the plans for which the council has already bought land to
realign the corner. Cr Carter believes the corner has space for a third lane to provide two lanes for northbound traffic from Montreal Street into Cranmer Square and a third turning right into Armagh Street He asked why the council had opted for a plan that would throttle traffic. The council’s plan shows two lanes for traffic travelling north along Montreal Street into
Cranmer Square. The right one of these would also take traffic turning right. Cr Carter said an extra lane could be added by reducing the size of the traffic island planned for the intersection. The sub-committee will reconsider the plan and the six tenders before the council for the work, scheduled to start soon. The tenders range from $34,172 to $40,458. The
council’s estimate for the work is $40,480. The changes include prohibiting westbound traffic continuing on Armagh Street through the intersection. That traffic will have to turn right into Cranmer Square. Traffic islands and plantings of the realigned corners are intended to make the sweep round the corner easier for vehicles. Access to Windsor Hotel near the comer is retained.
