Bicycle-pedestrian overpass

Under or over — the question of a bicyclepedestrian crossing in Deans Avenue is again of concern to Christchurch City councillors. Cr Maurice Carter told yesterday’s meeting of the works and traffic committee that an overpass should be considered.

When the council last talked about the crossing — mainly for pupils at the new Christchurch Girls’ High School — it gave a definite “no” to an underpass or subway beneath the road because of possible problems with people using it at night. There was merit in an-

other look at the cycle crossing as part of the proposed Ham cycleway from Deans Avenue to Deans Bush, councillors decided. The Riccarton Borough Council, which would be Involved in the project wants a meeting with the City Council to further investigate the feasibility

of a crossing. Before officers from the two councils meet for discussion, the City Council will again approach the school tor its thoughts on a crossing. The three-year plan for work on city cycleways from 1988 to 1991 was tabled for councillors’ information.
