Aircraft mishap
LES BLOXHAM,
travel editor
Wellington Airport was closed for a short time about 8.30 a.m. ysterday after an Ansett New Zealand Boeing 737 burst a tyre on landing with a hydraulics fault The flight had left for Auckland a few minutes earlier but was forced to turn back to Wellington when a warning light indicated a drop in hydraulics pressure.
This in turn forced Captain Bruce Irving to land at a much higher speed than normal with the flaps only partly extended. One of the aircraft’s four main tyres burst on touch-down and the aircraft had to be towed clear of the runway to the terminal. The 50 passengers on board were transferred to other flights. The aircraft was back in service again by 12.30 p.m. /' •■■■•■■«
