Farmers say restraints on beef unfair
PA Wellington The voluntary restraint agreement on beef exports to the United States is unfair, says the vicechairman of the meat and wool section of Federated Farmers, Mr Dick Davison. “It is by no means the first time such restraints have been placed on our beef exports to the United States,” Mr Davison said yesterday.
“However, on this occasion it could have been avoided as the restraint is largely the result of'an Increased kill this season. “This follows the carryover of unslaughtered stock as a result of the freezing industry strike last season,” he said. Mr Davison said this highlighted the unfairness of trade restrictions in view of the United States* for freer irpde.
It emphasised also New Zealand's reliance on the United States as a market for beef and the need for the meat Industry to take every opportunity to expand alternative markets. Mr. Davison said that in the short term the effect of the restraint would cause unwanted uncertainty for farmers, as the beef schedule is adjusted downward to allow for stooge and interest
