Meeting abandoned

PA Palmerston North The Manawatu Racing Cub’s meeting at Awapuni yesterday was abandoned after only five races. x

Although the track was officially firm, rain had made the surface slippery. With about 800 m to

travel in the fifth race, Pfui (Erin Jillings) lost her footing and almost

fell. Red Spit (Greg Childs) and Tamatl (Linda Ballantyne) both received checks in the incident

-After the race, all riders who had ridden in it were assembled in the judicial room, along with Phillip Mercer, who had ridden in three earlier races and reported his mounts had trouble with their footing. Most riders

felt the conditions were unsafe.

All riders at the meeting were asked to discuss whether they wished to continue, and the majority again felt it was not safe. The club’s secretary, Mr Bill Freeman, could not recall a previous occasion when races at’ Awapuni had to be abandoned during the programme.
