India beat Tamil Nadu, one of the stronger state sides, by eight wickets, bowling it out for 123 in 40 overs and overtaking its score in 22 overs. The World Cup holders batted on to make 185 for eight Manlnder's similarities with Bedi, one of the greatest of India’s slow bowlers, do not end with the fact that both are Sikhs. Like Bedi, Maninder is slow left arm and bowls with a beautiful, controlled rhythm. Duleep Mendis, Sri Lanka’s captain, who Is about to embark on his fourth World Cup, showed the form yesterday that has gained him the reputation of being one of the game’s hardest hitters. He struck 80 from 89 balls to deliver Sri Lanka from a crisis when it slumped to 20 for three against a Pakistan Invitation XI at Karachi. It recovered to 263 for nine from its 45 overs and won by 26 runs after the local team made 237 for six.

Mendls was assisted in rebuilding the innings by Brendon Kuruppu, the young opener who made 201 not out in his test debut against New Zealand in April.
