‘Strine’ Bible to be published

NZPA Sydney Australian Christians are set to have their own “fair dinkum” version of the Scriptures. The Bible Society said that it would publish an all-Australian Bible, with Australian illustrations, including an Aboriginalstyle depiction of Jesus on the Cross. "As Australian as the slouch hat and the übiquitous meat pie comes the first fair dinkum Aussie Bible,” the society said. However, its national information manager, Mr Stewart Jones, said he wanted to make it clear the Bible was "not an Ocker version. “It is just that we are using the common lan-

guage of Australian people,” he said. “The Bible will use the text of the Good News Bible, but areas such as spelling, weights, measures, distance and some linguistic expressions have been Australianised.” Mr Jones said this included changing the word “field” to “paddock” and using the word “cistern” instead of "tank.” So Leviticus, chapter 9, verse 9, begins: “When you harvest your paddock, do not cut the grain at the edge of the paddock...” The Bible, which is also part of the society’s contribution to the Australian bicentenary, will be released in January.
