Serenada Stud to sponsor Hannon Memorial
By JEFF SCOTT North Canterbury’s Serenada Stud, the home of Niatrix, J. D.’s Buck and Gee Whizz, has taken over the sponsorship of the Oamaru Trotting Club's Hannon Memorial on Labour Day. The stake for the openclass 2600 m pace (with C 8 and C 9 pacers eligible) has been boosted to $20,000 and will be known as the Serenada Stud Hannon Memorial after the withdrawal of the previous sponsor, National Bloodstock. The stud’s foundation sire, Niatrix, which was represented by a trial winner on Monday from his first crop, will lead out the Hannon field, while the stud’s owner, Mr Philip Iggo, has arranged for four of the stallion’s juveniles to parade before the race. The two-year-olds will run over 400 m at speed as part of the promotion. A free service to the Niatross stallion has been donated to the connections of the winner of the C2 pace on October 26, while a free service to J. D.’s Buck is part of the winning prize of the C 3 and C 4 pace on the same day. “Serenada” is also sponsoring a first for the club,
an open-class event for trotters on the first day of the meeting on October 24. Worth $lO,OOO, this race will be known as the Gee Whizz Handicap and also carries a free service to the stallion of the same name, the 1:59.2 two-year-old trotter, which was imported to New Zealand this year. The Oamaru club previously ran a C 3 and faster trot on the second day. Regal sulkies approved Regal racing sulkies have been given approval by the New Zealand Harness Racing Conference for use on New Zealand tracks. Approval has been limited to the Regal 601 and the Regal 605, which are to be distributed and serviced in New Zealand by Liddell Industries of Christchurch. The Regal sulky features a replacement component system (parts can be replaced if broken in a race smash) and is Australia’s top-selling sulky. The Regal sulky has been used by every Inter-Dominion Pacing Championship winner since 1982. This brand of sulky is also marketed in Europe and Macau. Attendants now mandatory The executive of the Harness Racing Conference has decided the onus is on all horsemen to ensure an attendant is available at the conclusion of each race, should the driver be required to give evidence in an inquiry. It is also to be suggested to clubs that members of their crash crews could be made available for such duties where required. Five clubs change Five more trotting clubs have been given approval to change their titles to Harness Racing Clubs. These are: the Central Districts HRC, the Manawatu HRC, the Wairarapa HRC (formerly Masterton), the Te Awamutu HRC and the Otaki HRC.
