Sweden reaches fifth Cup final
NZPA-Reuter Barcelona Sweden reached its fifth cMtecutive Davis Cup final when Stefan Edberg fired the farmer holder into a winning 9-1 lead over Spain in their rain-hit world group semi-final la Barcelona yesterday. Edberg beat Emilio Sanches, M, M, 8-4 in the first reverse singles which was
suspended un Munday because of heavy rain with the Spaniard one game up In the first set Sweden will play the final at home from December 1820 against India, which beat the holder, Australia, 3-2, in the other semi-final in Sydney on Sunday. Edberg's jubilant teammates grabbed him and
threw him into the air after he clinched Sweden's place In the final with a smash that wrong-footed the Spaniard. The Swedish coach, Hans Olsson, decided Mats Wilander would not play the second reverse singles against Sanchez's younger brother, Javier, making it a 3-2 victory for Sweden.
“I had a bad start, but then I got into the game. It was probably my best claycourt match ever,** Edberg told reporters. He thought Emilio Sanchez, who lost to Mats Wilander in the opening singles but won the doubles with Sergio Casal, did not play as well as he could have.
