Surgeon lacked letters

NZPA-Reuter Alessandria, Italy An Italian, aged 40, worked for 10 years as a brain surgeon at a state hospital in Alessandria although he had never qualified as a doctor, health authorities said. Luigi Negro was suspended after a routine check revealed he never

completed his medical studies at Turin University and his qualifications were false, the regional health service director, Domenico Marchegiani, said. Negro now faces dismissal and could be charged with fraud and abusing the medical profession.

Negro was respected by patients and colleagues at the hospital and had recently been appointed chief surgeon in the neurology department “It seems he was good at his job although he had no official qualifications. There were never any complaints about his work,” Marchegiani said.
