Artbank

Artbank, the Statefunded programme which aims to make contemporary New Zealand art accessible while at the same time improving public places, has begun purchasing paintings. Representatives of the three regional arts councils, June Ridings, Northern; Sandy Adsett, Central; and Tony Borick, Southern, have been charged with the task of puchasing works from within their regions as a nucleus for Artbank. Works by Robyn Kahukiwa, Margaret

Woolley, Albert McCarthy, Marilyn Webb, Nicola Jackson and Peter Cleverly have been purchased for the scheme. Artbank has run successfully in Canada since 1972 where the collection has grown by about 1000 works a year. Australia introduced a similar scheme in 1980, and by late last year its collection stood at more than 4000 works, which are made available on a rental basis to a wide range of public bodies. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the major client of the Australian Artbank.
