Duo performs opera arias

Sunday’s opera recital by two Canterbury singers is a repeat of a special concert in Wellington last year.

The singers are Judy Bellingham and Barbara Walton, and the programme of nineteenth century Italian arias and duets was chosen for them by the president of the Opera Society, Jeremy Commons. Barbara Walton is a soprano and Judy Bellingham a mezzo. They will be accompanied by David Vine. Mr Commons will introduce the items.

The programme contains “11 segreto,” the drinking song from Donizetti’s “Lucrezia Borgia”

and “Suicidio” from Ponchielli’s “La Gioconda.”

Donizetti is also represented by an aria from “La Regina di Golconda” and a duet from “Maria Padilla.” There is also a love duet from an opera by Mercadante and a barcarole from a comic opera by the Ricci brothers.

The programme includes two arias by Lauro Rossi.

The recital will end with the duet from “11 Conte di Marsico” the last of Giuseppe Balducci’s operas.

The opera recital will begin at 2.15 p.m. at the State Trinity Centre.
