NZPA-AAP Suva The military leader, Colonel Sitiveni Rabuka, early today declared Fiji a republic. He made the announcement in a national radio broadcast soon after midnight. It came almost 12 days after Colonel Rabuka staged his second coup d’etat in five months with the aim of ensuring ethnic Fijians’ political supremacy over the nation’s Indians, who slightly outnumber them.
