Voice to switch off

Radio 3ZB sports broadcaster, Ken Anderson, will retire from his broadcasting “hobby” at the end of the month. A taxation consultant when away from the microphone, Mr Anderson said that he had had to make “this terrible decision” between continuing in broadcasting and devoting more time to his family and business. “I have only ever worked for 3ZB, and would only ever work for them. But I can’t go on for ever,” he said. Mr Anderson began in 1972 as a rugby commentator, and became well known for his commentaries during the 1974 Commonwealth Games. He fronted 3ZB’s Saturday afternoon “Summertime Scoreboard” programme, and did rugby commentaries in winter. He won a Mobil Award as Best Sports Broadcaster during Canterbury’s most recent tenure of the Ranfurly Shield. Recently, he has been a member of the station’s breakfast team, broadcasting sports results.

Radio New Zealand’s district manager, Mr lan Vernazoni, said that he was sorry to lose Mr Anderson’s services, but realised that his business commitments had grown to the extent that he could not give broadcasting the time he would like. Mr Vernazoni said that he was negotiating for a replacement
