Aust, follows bullion fall
NZPA—AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed sharply lower yesterday as Investors dumped stocks following a large fall overnight in international bullion prices. Brokers said the almost SUSS fall in the metal 5U5453.25 an ounce in New York sparked heavy selling pressure, with gold-related scrip particularly hard hit At the close, the all ordinaries index was 30.6 points down at 2218.6 as the ail industrials slipped 34.7 to 3302.8, the gold marker 117.9 to 3828.1 and the all resources index 33.2 to 1386.5. Turnover was a moderate 127.33 M shares worth sAust 239.75 M as falls more than doubled rises. Gold stocks bore the brunt of market bearishness, with heavyweight Renison slipping 60c to 1550, Consolidated Exploration 35 to 420 and Metana 30 to 1470. Fifteen cent losses also took North Kalgurli Mines to 180, Placer Pacific to 355 and Gold Mines of Kalgooriie to 1010. Among other resources, Peko Wallsend slumped 30 to 920, Western Mining 24 to 896 and North Broken Hill 20 to 445. . Elsewhere, market leader BHP fell 5 to 1060 and CSR the same to 470. Interest rate-sensitive industrials were also weaker in response to higher money market interest rates. Developers, building materials, transport and banking stocks felt the force of investor nervousness, with the transport index down 97 points, or 2.8 per cent to 3307.6. Among the transporters, Brambles fell 55 to 1100, Mayne Nickless 30 to 620 and TNT 20 to 660, while in the banks, ANZ dropped 20 to 520, the National Australia Bank 10 to 576 and Westpac 2 to 658. -
