NZPA-AAP Melbourne The former top three-year-old Tristram emerged as a serious Caulfield Cup contender with a narrow win in the Royal Show Handicap (1800 m at Caulfield today. The victory was a relief for Caulfield trainer Geoff Murphy, who, has brought the horse back after throat surgery. Tristram (16-1) returned to his best scoring by a short half head from Real Purpose (7-1) and the hot favourite, Vo Rogue (8-11). It was Tristram’s fourth run this campaign after finishing down the track at his three previous runs. The Sir Tristram stallion was a more than useful horse last spring, finishing a close second in the Caulfield Guineas and fourth in the Caulfield Cup after being trapped wide. Bookmakers reacted to yesterday’s win by halving his price to 20-1 for this year’s $627,000 Caulfield Cup on October 17.
