Top skaters to visit N.Z.
PA Auckland The world men’s artistic roller free-skating champion, Scott Cohen, and the world men’s figure-skating champion, Skip Clinton, will be in Auckland next month to defend their titles. The United States pair, aged 22 and 29 respectively, are among the contingent of 24 skaters from their country who will contest the championships at the Chase Stadium, from October 7 to October 11. The team, chosen at the recent United States national skating championships in Lincoln, Nebraska, is regarded as very strong by the New Zealand training squads co-ordinator, Jack Fanthorpe, of Napier. In spite of the outstanding calibre of the Americans, and the contestants from 15 other countries, including Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, New Zealand representatives are expected to be placed well in the world championships.
The top New' Zealand dance couples, Michelle Pickles and Stephen Signal (Papatoetoe) and Tony Alexander and Celeste Hogan (Manukau), may lack the showmanship of the Americans, but they have shown enough potential in recent world championships to raise hopes that they will be . placed among toe top of the 17 countries Peter Leitz and Tanyi\ Ludvigsen (Mount Wellington) are the third dance couple from New Zealand. The other New Zealand team members Women’s fissures: JRTendy Lundon (Gistrorne), Lisa Stevens (Glenfield), LeighAnn Wig (Napier). Men’s figures: Craig Beets (Gisborne), Richard Legge (Papatoetoe).
