China, N.Z. to benefit from visit

PA Tauranga Benefits for China and New Zealand are possible as a result of the visit of a six-man Chinese agricultural mission to New Zealand. The Mission leader, Huang Yongning said in Bay of Plenty on Saturday that his group was studying the whole field of agricultural, horticultural and animal husbandry practices during a twoweek visit. China could help New Zealand develop new varieties of kiwifruit by supplying germ plasma for hybridisation, he said. "We have more than 50 kiwifruit varieties,” he said.

“Not all are green, some have red flesh, other varieties are hairless and there are many different flavours, If you hybridise yours with ours you will get more diverse varieties.”

New Zealand could help China with sheep husbandry. China was building up flocks and was particularly interested in the Corriedale and Coopworth breeds.

The delegation arrived in New Zealand on September 12 and has visited farms at Levin, Last Saturday the delegation it went to Te Puna before arriving at the D.S.I.R. orchard at Te Puke. From there it went to Rotorua and was to fly to the South Island to study cropping and highcountry farming. The delegation will leave New Zealand on Friday.
