Hotel ordered to pay cook compensation
PA Wellington A Palmerston North hotel has been ordered to pay a cook $2OOO compensation and a further $351 in lost wages after an
Arbitration Court ruling that she was unjustifiably dismissed from her job earlier this year. The cook, who had been employed at the Majestic Hotel since April, 1984, was dismissed in February this year by the new lessee because of what the lessee said was
the hotel’s “financial position,” the Court judgment said.
But the Court noted that the cook was the union
delegate and took her responsibilities seriously, "and it seems that as much ... Mr Lyons found her something of an irritant.”
The Court said the lessee’s reason for her dismissal had not been established and based on the “extremely sketchy” financial evidence placed before it there was inadequate financial information to justify her dismissal.
The Court observed the hotel employed four cooks, the same number as at the time of her dismissal.
