Big yar dings cause price drops

Prime cattle and sheep prices dropped heavily in the face of large yardings at Addington Market yesterday. The strengthening New Zealand dollar also discouraged buyers from meeting levels set at recent strong sales. Few cattle would have made more than $2 a kilogram. Sheep prices fell between $3 and $4. Lambs also dropped substantially at first, but recovered as the sale progressed to be. more in line with recent weeks. Prime lambs Lamb prices dropped by $3 in the early stages of the market as buyers faced a much larger yarding than recent weeks. The prices reflected levels set about three weeks ago. The market rallied later to bring most stock back into Une with last week’s strong sale, but ram iambs, which are coming to the end of their season, remained $3 down on last week. Springing second .calving Friesian cows sold between $485 and $540 while in-mUk second-calving Friesian cows sold up to $502.50. Nineteen animals were yarded. ’ Prime pigs Another small yarding of prime pigs had a very strong sale. Quality was excellent with some very good quality heavy pigs selling to $l9O. Good-quality porkers also sold welL - ' A large ‘ yarding of choppers also sold well, with top pigs selling to $240 with most of the yarding making between $2OO and $220. .
