Horse cruelty cases
PA Hamilton A recent rise in horse cruelty cases' - in the Rotorua area has prompted the formation of a Horse Protection Society branch there, says the Waikato society’s secretary, Mrs Elizabeth McFarlane. Cruelty cases had risen steadily in the last five years and when four young mares had to be rescued from starvation this year the society decided more members Were needed in the area, she said. "One of the four horses found had to be destroyed. It was just a bag of bones, badly emaciated
from lack of food. “The horses were on two acres of bare land beside the Atiarnuri high-S ’ way. They’d been there for 12 months. The neighbours must have seen > them but nobody said any--® thing. “One woman watched them deteriorate and in |' desperation she', tele- £ ■ phoned me,” Mrs McFar- fil lane said. . ,f The three surviving if | mares now had good homes, one in Rotorua and two in Hamilton. ■#' “You wouldn’t believe . the difference some good | feed has made. They are |: now looking rather fine animals,” she said.
