Late change

The Waitangi Tribunal yesterday apologised for a last-minute change to its schedule this week.

Some people travelled from as far afield as Wellington and the West Coast only to learn that their concern, Murihiku, would not be covered this week.

The hearing will deal with Kemp’s Purchase, land in Canterbury, and Otago.

On Thursday the tribunal will travel to Kaikoura to inspect lands covered in the last hearing. The third hearing, scheduled for October, has been cancelled and now will be held on November 2 in Dunedin. The Ngai Tahu Maori Trust Board will respond to the cross-claim at the Tuahiwi marae on November 5. The Murihiku and Rakiura areas of the claim are expected to be dealt with on February 1 and mahinga kai (food resources) on February 22.
