Man found hanged

PA New Plymouth A former Taranaki man whose 1984 manslaughter conviction prompted a national petition for stiffer penalities has been found dead in an Auckland halfway house.

He was Dion Koroneihana Brandt, 23, who was found hanged in a Silverdale house last Saturday.

The police are not looking for any one else in connection with the death.

In March, 1984, Brandt was convicted of the manslaughter of a New Plymouth man, Gregory Bryan Burkett, after a fight broke out outside a party at the city’s War Memorial Hall in October, 1983. Mr Burkett died of stab wounds.

Brandt was jailed for 5 l / 2 years, but was released on parole earlier this year. While on parole, he allegedly assaulted a female and caused wilful damage to a Waltara house on August 23. He appeared in the District Court at Auckland on September 8 to answer the charges, but they were withdrawn.

The petition, organised by Mr Burkett’s parents, called for severe punishment for violent, meaningless and brutal crime. It was organised by his mother, Mrs Vai Burkett, of Oakura.
