The Engineers’ Union will meet its 200 members affected by. the Crown Crystal Glass. closing at the Hornby rugby league clubrooms tomorrow.
The closing of the A.C.I. ..New Zealand, Ltd, Crown Crystal Glass manufacturing plant at Hornby with a loss of 280 jobs, was announced by management last week. The workers will finish at the end of October, but a staff of 16 will remain to run a distribution centre.
Mr Bob Todd, regional branch secretary of the Engineers’ Union, said a redundancy agreement would be proposed at tomorrow’s meeting and if endorsed would then be negotiated with the company.
The union hoped to meet company representatives early next week.
Mr Todd said there was no agreement covering redundancies at the plant, but 40 glass workers laid off last year had received six weeks pay for the first year of service with the company, and two weeks for each subsequent year.
