Ten cars involved in pile-up

Ten cars were involved in a nose-to-tail pile-up on the Northern Motorway yesterday. Two people suffered minor injuries in three accidents which reduced motorway traffic to a crawl for more than half an hour.

The incident began when a car ran into the back of another on the Waimakariri Bridge shortly before 5 p.m.

Two other accidents occurred shortly afterwards piling up cars in both lanes, the length of the bridge. Seven cars had to be towed from the scene.

A Ministry of Transport spokesman said there were 11 accidents within five hours yesterday from mid-afternoon when heavy rain began.
