Taukei backing queried
NZPA-AAP Suva The leaders of Fiji’s militant Taukei movement were challenged yesterday to demonstrate how many people they truly represented. The challenge was issued by a former senator, Etuate Tavai, who said in a press statement “the end is nigh” for the Tahkei movement.
“The Fijian people do not like its lies, its threats and its violence,” Mr Tavai said. “For such a movement to call itself Fijian lowers the dignity, of every Fijian person in our country.” (The Taukei has led protests against the deposed Indian-majority Coalition Government and favours a Parliament dominated by ethnic Fijians.)
Mr Tavai said he would like the Taukei spokesman, Ratu Meli Vesikula, to give the people of Fiji some demonstration, of who they represented.
