Minister, dept praised
PA Wellington Environmental groups have congratulated a Minister and the Conservation Department on what they say is a change of heart over the Monowai Mine Application Tribunal hearing.
The Thames Coast Protection Society and Coromandel Peninsula Watchdog groups said that the Minister, Ms Helen Clark, and the Conservation Department had engaged a “top planning” lawyer to represent them at the hearing.
A spokeswoman, Dr Rachel Garden, said the move was “an important change of heart.”
“Environmental groups applaud the new stand of the Minister and Department of Conservation,” she said.
“It must now be top priority for the department to complete its survey of the area and gazette this land as a conservation park. The Minister must now look very carefully at her obligations under the act in considering the consent issue.”
