Aust, at record levels

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket soared sharply higher to close at record levels yesterday as investors chased scrip across the boards. Brokers said the gains were largely fuelled by speculation on a number of fronts and Prime Minister Bob Hawke' expressing concern at the level of the Australian dollar. At the close, the all-ordin-aries index was 24.6 points higher at a record 2230.7. Its previous all time high of 2210.5 was set on Monday, September 2. The all-industri-als rose 35.8 to 3286.4, the allgold 22.5 to 3955.9 and the all-resources 15.9 to 1420.3. Turnover was a heavy 179.04 million shares worth J415.19M. Rises outnumbered falls by four to three.

Gains were seen across the boards as the market soared on speculation of a squeeze on September share price index futures, Mr Hawke’s comments on the Australian dollar, steadier bullion prices, and solid performances on London and New York exchanges overnight. * Many industrial stocks — particularly banks, retailers, merchants and paper and packagers — posted substantial gains.

National Australia Bank jumped 18c to 596 while Westpac added 14c to 700 and ANZ 8c to 566. A 24c rise in Elders IXL to 584 saw the merchants subindex jump 130.8 points, or 2.8 per cent. Retailers Coles and David Jones added 12c to 914 and ten to 1330 respectively. Elsewhere, Fairfax stole the limelight, closing steady at 900 on turnover of 3.66 M shares worth 533.02 M. Sunshine Australia, a takeover target of Wormaid, topped turnover as 9.53 M shares worth 527.65 M changed hands. Much of that represented Wormaid buying Direct Acceptance Corp’s 12.5 per cent in Sunshine. Mixed demand among gold stocks saw Consolidated Exploration climb 20c to 520, Renison 10c to 1520 and Kidston 10c to 740. Sons of Gwalia, however, lost 15 to 1385 and Noranda Pacific 10c to 465.

Heavyweight resources recovered from early sharp losses to post significant gains, with North Broken Hill up 20c to 465, Peko 30c to 900 and Western Mining 12c to 1000.

Elsewhere, BHP added 20c to 1060.
