Record pen price in strong lamb sale

A strong lamb sale produced a possible record price for one pen of lambs at Addington Market yesterday. Three woolly Romney cross ram lambs each made $53.40. Prices for other lambs ended about $1 higher than last week’s prices, with some lighter animals making as much as $2 more. Another large yarding of ewes saw prices ease after holding at last week’s levels for most of the sale. Most bobby calf prices again increased, although buyers were faced with another large yarding. Prime lambs Three Romney cross ram lambs were sold at a possible record price of $53.40. The lambs, which had very long coats of wool, were sold on behalf of Mrs Mary. Ballagh, of Oxford. Although yesterday’s sale started at last week’s levels, demand from buyers soon pushed up prices by $1 for medium and heavier animals. Light lambs improved by as much as $2 as the sale progressed. Prices for most cattle failed to improve in an uninspiring cattie sale yesterday, although the quality of animals offered was good.

The mild winter had allowed some heifers to become a little too fat and their prices eased slightly. Thg yarding was 346 compared to 366 last week. Bobby calves Prices for all bobby calves except Friesian heifers increased in price again in spite of another large yarding of 366. Most Friesian bull calves made $6O to $132 while the heifer calves made $36 to $52. Beef cross bull calves made $92 to $l4O, while most beef cross heifer calves made $74 to $lOO. Dairy cows Two Friesian heifers in calf to a Hereford bull made $55 in the dairy sale yesterday. A third heifer which had already calved her Hereford cross calf made $522.50. Other springing Friesian heifers made $415 to $432. A Murray Grey heifer in calf to a Simmental bull made $470, a Jersey heifer made $420 and a Ayrshire heifer made $350. Prime pigs A small yarding of prime pigs was offered’ yesterday and the resulting demand pushed prices a little higher. The best baconers sold to $lB5 and the best porkers to $155. The quality of animals was much better than recent weeks. ■ ■ \ ' ■ Choppers were also in short supply and the market fully recovered last week’s drop with the best pigs selling at $272. Few overfat choppers were yarded. Values were.— Light pork, $llO to $l3O. Medium to heavy pork, $135 to $155. Light to medium bacon, $l6O. to $175. .-. Heavy bacon, to $lB5. Light choppers, $l6O to $2lO. Heavy choppers, $220 to $250. Store pigs ■ A medium-sized yarding Of store pigs had another reasonable sale. The market consisted mainly of slips and stores of good quality: ss: Weaners e were slightly easier with most making between $55 and $65. Slips and bigger stores sold at similar rates to recent sales. Values were.— Small weaners, $46 to $55. Good weaners, $56 to $65. Slips and small stores, $6B to $B5. Large stores, $9O to $llO.
