Spring early this year
The mild winter meant bulbs, flowers, and trees were early this year, according to the Lincoln College climate station. Using a thermal definition of the start of spring (when the running weekly mean temperature exceeds 9deg.) Christchurch’s spring began about August 20, the college reported. Using this same definition, spring normally starts about September 15, in contrast to the calendar definition which begins spring on September 1. The mean temperature for August was 2.3 deg. above average, continuing the miid weather which characterised the winter.
Regular west to northwesterly winds brought warm, dry days and mild nights. Anticyclonic weather brought periods of light winds, foggy mornings and sunny afternoons.
