Commitment to fiscal restraint anticipated

NZPA-AAP Sydney

Both domestic and international capital markets are looking to tomorrow’s federal Budget to confirm the Australian Government’s commitment to fiscal restraint.

Such a commitment, in a sharply lower projected Budget deficit for 1987-88 of under $1 billion, is expected to add to the financial market’s bullish tone.

In the lead up to tomorrow’s statement the markets have lifted the Australian dollar to 16month highs and reduced interest rates to near three year lows.

The Budget will also be a testing ground for further home loan interest reductions in the coming weeks.

This follows cuts in deposit rates by the major banking houses late in August and earlier this month.
