Aickin beaten

NZPA-AAP Hobart The Tasmanian amateur golfer, Brett Johns, yesterday defied all the odds to win his first Australian amateur championship defeating the New Zealander, Phillip Aickin, in the 36-hole final at Royal Hobart Johns, 26 yesterday, tied up the championship at the sixteenth with a par four after Aickin ' had missed a near gimme to keep the match alive. Aickin was favoured to win and take yet another Australian trophy back to New Zealand.

But Johns powered his way to a three up lead after the first 18 holes then played percentage golf to win the crown.

This was bls seventh Australian amateur appearance but the first time he had made it through the qualifying round.
