Synagogue window

Sir,—The much-admired feature window of the Christchurch Synagogue, now to be relocated in another building, has always been referred to as the "Star of David.” I was told some years ago that it should be called the “Shield of David”; that from a Jewish friend. Bible scholars and historians describe the symbol of Judaism as “David’s Shield,” being a hexagram formed of two equilateral triangles. It has six points. A star has five points, made without lifting the pen from the paper. Give it eight points and you end up with an asterisk. — Yours, etc.,

HUGH TAYLOR. September 9, 1987.
