Date for opening new national park

PA Greymouth Paparoa, New Zealand’s newest and smallest national park, will be officially opened on December 5, the Conservation Department has announced. The 30,000 ha park, in the Paparoa Ranges between Westport and Greymouth, was proclaimed last year, along with Whanganui National Park, ending years of conflict between conservationists and West Coast local body

interests. Paparoa is the second national park on the West Coast. The Westland National Park round the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers was opened in 1960. The Governor-General, Sir Paul Reeves, will declare the Paparoa park open in a ceremony outside the Punakaiki Visitors’ Centre.

Afterwards, he will lead the official party out to the Pancake Rocks, where a commemorative plaque will be unveiled.
