First debate to Australian side
PA Westport The Australian debating team has convincingly won the first in a series of three test debates against New Zealand. The Australian team of Francis Greenslade, Robin Connaughton and Warren Lee successfully negated the motion “That we should take the jihad to Islam,” in the debate in Westport. The New Zealand team of Peter Biggs, Noel Sainsbury and Jock Fanselow affirmed. The three judges were unanimous in awarding the debate to the Austra-
Best speakers were Connaughton of Australia, and Fanselow, of New Zealand. At stake in the three-debate series is the Norwood Trophy, given by Sir Walter Norwood in 1972. New Zealand holds the trophy.
The second test will be held, in Wellington on September 15, the final debate being held in Auckland on September 19.
While in New Zealand the Australians will also debate Buller, Wellington, Wanganui, and Auckland and New Zealand universities’ teams.
