Differential pay rates rejected
PA Wellington Teachers college students, say they have rejected the proposal by the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, l in his new role as Minister of Education for differential pay rates for teachers of mathematics and science. I They say Mr Lange is ' looking in .the wrong I place for the solution to the shortage of secondary teachers. The vice-president of
the Teacher Trainees’ Association, Mr Steve May, said the shortage, which was worst in mathematics and sciences, began at the teachers’ college level. “If the Government is really concerned about such shortages it must realise that they begin at teacher training level where a lack of adequate salary prevents many of those most needed (in teaching) from applying
in the first place,” Mr May said. Mr Lange raised the differential pay proposal at the recent conference of the Post-Primary Teachers’ Association. The P.P.T.A. was unanimous in rejecting the idea. Mr May said differential pay rates were a short-term solution and would be difficult to implement
