Northern horses likely to dominate Waterlea first leg

By J. J. BOYLE One win in 20 was the bleak South Island record in two days of racing at the Marlborough Racing Club’s meeting in May. The Ashburton-trained Charlie’s Pal won the feature race on the second day of that meeting, but the other major portions were served up to Central Districts stables. Charlie’s Pal is back at Waterlea for the Thompson and Devanney Cup Trial, the Marlborough club’s feature race today, but might not find quite enough to cope with the North Island assault on the race.

The northern assault could be spearheaded by Mr Shogun, a six-year-old son of Vice Regal from the Adams-Wheeler stable at New Plymouth.

Mr Shogun has won four races and is unlikely to match the record of his dam, the talented Rosie’s Girl (Great Northern Oaks, Waikato Guineas) but he is a horse in form, with a win, a second and a third from as many starts this season. His win, two starts back, was in a class 3 middle distance event at Ellerslie, a performance characterised by a determined finish. The Riccarton jockey, Grant Davison, who will ride Mr Shogun today, also Jetbet: 5 Race 1 12.10 OASIS BLENHEIM MAIDEN $3800; 1410 m 1 7000 Audly 2 M. Enright 55.0 2 0 Black Cavalier 9 R. Hannam 55.0

partnered him in his last-start third at New Plymouth on September 2. Chris Johnson, another successful Riccarton jockey, hopes for a Cup Trial win on Passive Prince, another runner for the North Island.

Passive Prince started his nine-year-old racing with two placed runs at the Grand National meeting, and added another second at Wanganui later in August. Vail of Tralee is another likely North Island-trained prospect for the North Island from her position skg below Passive Prince in the handicap. After three starts this season this six-year-old from Levin should be seasoned enough to pose problems for those above her in the weights. The thin ranks of South Island-trained horses engaged today might not contain the material to emerge with something like honours even. But whatever their fortunes earlier, they should be boosted when the speedster, Black Heath, tilts at the honours for the Blenheim Sun Country Lodge Handicap, second leg of today’s T.A.B. double. If Black Heath goes under South Islanders might find today’s programme memorable for the wrong reasons.
