Trying out a sport new to New Zealand, Mike Smith, of Christchurch, para-glides from the summit of Mount Bruce, near Mount Hutt, down to the base of the Diamond Face. He took off and landed on skis. Mr Smith plans to para-glide from Mount Cook and Mount Tasman early next year, when the weather should be favourable. With para-gliders travelling at 800 ft a minute, he describes his new sport as “an out-of-this-world experience.” Most flights last about a minute. Para-gliding is a new sport for New Zealanders, practised by only seven or eight people. A para-glider is a modified parachute, weighing about 3kg. Mr Smith, who has been a climber for 20 years, took up para-gliding because it “fitted perfectly” with mountaineering.
