Tasman partners exercise at the double

The number of military exercises between New Zealand and Australia had doubled since 1885, said the Australian Minister of Defence, Mr Beazley, yesterday. He said there were also nearly twice as many New Zealand staff attending Australian defence establishments. Mr Beazley agreed there was some extra cost to his country caused by the need for closer co-operation with New Zealand, since the United States ended three-nation exercises. But he said the amount of extra spending was not large. “What is happening more and more is that New Zealand forces are slotting into activities which we once did on our own.” However, Mr Beazley expressed the wish that New Zealand return to the A.N.Z.U3. alliance. “We have always maintained the position that we want A.NXUJS. to function as a trilateral relationship.” If that was not possible in the meantime, Australia's aim was to secure the best relationships It could with both New Zealand and the United States. Australia had been “reasonably successful” in doing that, said Mr Beazley.
