‘Carmen’ returns
Francesco Rosi’s "Carmen” begins screening at the Academy Cinema tomorrow. Set in 1875, the film is shot entirely on locations in Andalusia, using Ronda and Carmona and Seville itself to simulate Seville of that era. Based on the opera by Georges Bizet and the novel by Prosper Merimee, the film was made in 1984. Julia Migenes-Johnson’s “freckled gamine Carmen is the chief glory of the production” according to one critic, who adds that Placido Domingo as Don Jose “plays the clod to perfection.” The score is played by the Orchestre National de France, conducted by Lorin Maazel.
