Bank criticised over tour

NZPA-AFP Johannesburg South Africa's First National Bank, one of the top two in the country, has come under fire from anti-apartheid organisations for sponsoring the rebel South Seas Barbarians rugby team. The attacks on the bank and its managing director, Mr Chris Ball, come after an investigation into the bank instigated by President Pieter Botha because of its alleged dealings with anti-apartheid groups. * The main black con- , sciousness group, the Aza-

nian People’s Organisation (Azapo), strongly attacked First National for its sponsorship of the rebel tour.

First National’s general manager, Mr Jimmy McKenzie, said the bank was “delighted to welcome” the Pacific Islanders’ team to South Africa because the tour would boost rugby at all levels.

Azapo’s publicity secretary, Mr Muntu Myeza, said the new move by the bank directly contradicted earlier anti-apartheid statements by Mr Ball.
